Liberty… My biggest competition yet!

July 17, 2011 by · 3 Comments · Sk8

Hey everyone,
On Tuesday I competed in the biggest competition I had ever competed in. I competed in liberty. I went with two of my best friends from skating, Jordyn, and Isabella, and our coach. My mom and godfather came, as well as Jordyns parents and grandmother, as well as Isabella’s dad and his girlfriend. On Monday night, we all drive down to Pennsylvania,  and stayed in the same hotel. At the hotel, we played at the arcade and went to the pool. In the morning, we had breakfast in the breakfast balcony, then went strait to the rink. We all skated a warm up session, to get used to the huge rink, that is about twice as big as my home rink. When we were done skating, we started getting ready to skate (putting on makeup and getting our dresses on.) then finally at 12:30 Isabella skated. After her, Jordyn went at 1:30, then I went at 1:45. Isabella got 3rd, out of 7, Jordyn got 2nd out of 6, and I got 5th out of 8. I was at a disadvantage, because everyone I was against had a jump in my program that I didn’t have, and they got a lot of points for that.

Overall, we all skated clean programs and had fun!

Keep blogging (and figure skating if you do that)

My 4th of July

July 10, 2011 by · No Comments · Holidays

Hi everyone,

What did you do for you 4th of July?

Did you see fireworks?

Stay up late?

Watch movies?

Go out for dinner at a fancy restaurant?

I’ll tell you what I did!

On Saturday night I spent the night at my grandparents house in New Haven, CT. They just got a really adorable new Shih Tzu Puppy named Ming. He will just sit in your lap for hours on end.

We went out for dinner at this really good restaurant where they made there own pasta. When we got home, we watched Rainman, an old movie about someone with autism. It reminded me of a book I read called Rules by Cynthia Lord, Its about a girl with an autistic little brother, and how her life is so different because of her brothers autism.

The next day I took some pics of flowers in my grandmothers garden. Here are some pictures from her garden (and a picture of ming:

How do you like my pictures?

What did you do for your fourth of July?

Keep blogging,

I am apparently now faculty at my school!!

July 4, 2011 by · 6 Comments · Ms. G's class, and other school things, Random Stuff

Yup, I am. Or at least I was at my school’s Teach 21 conference. Teach 21 is a conference for teachers about 21st century learning. Last week my school had this conference, where the people from our school taught people from all around the us about things they do at our school. My teacher, Ms G, did one called Tech Toolbox, she talked about different websites that she used to help her teach. She talked about word clouds,  blogs, twitter, animoto and much, much more. She signed people up, and had them use some of the different sites, and showed them some of the work we did in our class. That’s where I come in. Lots of people weren’t very tech savvy, and didn’t know anything about computers. (That was probably why they where taking the class in the first place!) I happen to be very tech savvy, and I only got questions like “Where does it say sign in?” with answers like “Right there on that big red button in the middle of the screen.” Despite the simplicity of the questions, I still received great reviews, and lots of “We are so lucky to have you here.”

Anyway, I ended up coming home with Teach 21 water bottles, pens, and a The School @ Columbia name tag that said my name, then FACULTY in big capital letters.

Keep blogging,

Catherine

11 hours, 5 days a week, that is. As you all know, I am  a figure skater, and that is my camp; 55 hours a week of hard on and off ice training.  camp is at Chelsea Piers. Here is the schedule, if your curious.

6:30 I arrive at the rink and stretch, then I put my skates on.

7:00 We get on the ice, and skater for an hour.

8:00 We get off, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I have ballet, on Tuesday and Thursday I have extra stretching until 9:15.

9:30 We go over to the sports center. On Monday I have yoga, on Tuesday and Thursday I have pilates, and on Wednesday we have hip-hop.

11:00 We have lunch. There is a Famiglia at the rink, so all of our food comes from there. There is pizza on Monday, chicken on Teusday (but I get whatever In want from Famiglia, because I am vegetarian!!) Pasta on Wednesday, Sandwiches (with meat) on Thursday (I get free food again), and finally Pizza with garlic knots on Friday.

11:30 We get on the ice and practice until 1:50 (I normally have a private lesson somewhere in there.

1:50 We have a group on ice lesson. On  Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, we have synchro, on Tuesday and Thursday we have power skating.

2:30 We have fitness training, where we run stairs, do hard abdominal exercises, run sprints, and much more.

4:00 We skate for one last hour

5:00 I have a last stretch, and then leave  at 5:30

As you can see, I have long, tiring days, but they are fun. I train hard with all of my friends, and we advance together.

Would you go to my camp? What do you think your favorite part of it would be?

Extra, Extra, Read all About it!

June 23, 2011 by · 1 Comment · Ms. G's class, and other school things

Hi guys,

Here is a visiting editors post from my friends and classmates blog, I think it is written in a very interesting fashion, don’t you?

This is Claire reporting for the Grade 5 news. I’m  here at the annual fifth grade Olympics, reporting for Class 5A. As a part of their Ancient Greece study, they do an Olympics every year. All students have been looking forward to this forever.

Class 5A will today be called Sparta, the ancient Greek city-state. Sparta is competing against Corinth, Delphi and Athens for the first place Olympic title.

They arrive in their chariots (school buses) at the field. After lining up, Sparta gives it their best to recite their very own chant, followed by the competitors reciting theirs. We proceed to the first event, the 4×100 relay.

And.. Sparta comes in second. Same for the 4×200. That gave Sparta 10 points. This goes on, With excitement, until all competitors leave for the lunch tables. At this point it is drizzling, but all athletes go on. After lunch, which was filled with smudged face paint and excited cheers, they proceeded on to the track. I took my place in the middle of the track to watch the 800m.

This race was particularly fun, partly because it was quite long, and partly because of the beginning and end. At the beginning, an athlete started very fast. Everyone took a deep breath. She was far ahead, but everyone knew she wouldn’t make it at that speed.

And everyone was right. She sank back after 400m, leaving the way for our next two runners-up (get it?). One was in the lead, coming towards 200m left. As she came to about 175 left, our second place runner took up speed. She ran faster and faster, until finally our two racers were nudging each other shoulder-to-shoulder. From my perspective, I couldn’t see who won, but I learned later that the one who had put on that amazing burst of speed at the end won.

Here are a few action shots taken by the fabulous Ms. G:

Which event would you have competed in; Long Jump, Shot Put, Discus, 4×200, 4×100, 80m, or 800m?

-Claire, reporting for Grade 5 News

My note: Our cheer is very long and laborious, if anyone wants to hear it, they can comment on this post, and I will put the cheer in a comment.

Keep Blogging,

Catherine

Cranes for Japan

May 13, 2011 by · No Comments · Ms. G's class, and other school things

Here is a post my teacher wrote on our class blog:

Our school decided as a community that we wanted to help Japan after the devastating earthquakes and tsunami, and particularly wanted to help Japan’s children. We found out about a program where for every paper crane (origami folded cranes) that we made by 25th April, OshKosh would send an item of children’s clothing to Japan. We set our target at 1000. A few teachers knew how to fold the cranes, and we invited one to come to our class to teach us how to make them. The first time, it was really difficult to follow the directions but Ms. Kim was very patient with us and we took our time. We made 13 cranes (one each) that day. Over the weekend, Catherine got together with some friends, taught them how to fold cranes, and on Monday she came in with about 50 cranes in a bag! From then on, our class were off! Many students in our class gave up recess time to go to make cranes in the art studio, and would take home paper from the classroom to make them after school and bring them in. We made hundreds! By the 25th of April, the day of the final count, we were ecstatic – we had not only reached our target of 1000, but we had more than quadrupled it!! Yes, our final total was 4927 cranes. That is almost 5000 items of clothing for OshKosh to send to Japan. Great work everyone!!

I probably made about 200 cranes myself!
